William Hoynes earned a BA in history and political science from Tufts University and a PhD in sociology from Boston College. He is Professor of Sociology at Vassar College, where he teaches introductory sociology as well as courses on media, culture research methods, and social theory. During his more than 20 years at Vassar, Professor Hoynes has served as chair of the Sociology Department and director of both the Media Studies Program and the American Studies Program. In addition to various journal articles and book chapters on public broadcasting in the United States, Professor Hoynes is the author of Public Television for Sale: Media, the Market, and the Public Sphere, which was awarded the Goldsmith Book Prize from the Shorenstein Center on Media, Politics and Public Policy at Harvard University's John F.
